UN calls on Africa to harness technology to drive sustainable economic development. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General has encouraged the continent to capitalize on technological advances, with a focus on inclusive and environmentally friendly development.

In his message for the 35th anniversary of Africa Industrialization Day celebrated on 20 November, Guterres hailed Africa’s significant progress, highlighting the exemplary economic growth achieved in recent decades.

According to him, initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area and the continent’s young, vibrant population make Africa a rising force on the global stage, especially in renewable energy.

This year’s theme highlights the potential of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, which could strengthen various sectors and accelerate economic growth. Guterres believes that AI could not only increase the continent’s competitiveness in green industries, but also generate new jobs and contribute to African prosperity while limiting carbon emissions.

He also recalled the adoption of the Global Digital Compact in September, which promotes international cooperation around innovative technologies and proposes a universal framework for the governance of artificial intelligence. This compact emphasizes the importance of public digital infrastructures, such as digital payment systems, to stimulate economic activity and regional integration in Africa.
