HealthTech

HealthTech, a key lever for transforming health systems in Africa.

A new study co-funded by the African Development Bank highlights the strategic role of health technology (HealthTech) innovations in strengthening health systems in Africa. Conducted by HealthTech Hub Africa and VillageReach, with financial support from UBS Optimus Foundation and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the study highlights that integrating HealthTech can improve access to care, strengthen provider capacity, and reduce costs, thereby accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The report, titled “Policy Blueprint to Fast-Track HealthTech Innovations in Public Health in Africa,” draws on consultations in 11 African countries including Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa to identify challenges and opportunities in the sector.

Obstacles identified include a lack of clear policies, fragmented data systems, and a lack of funding. Recommendations include better coordination among stakeholders, improved data access policies, and support for sustainable innovation.

Babatunde Omilola, head of public health at the African Development Bank, welcomed the initiative, saying the proposed policy guidelines will enable African governments to create an enabling environment for innovations to emerge that can improve the quality and access to care for millions of people.

The study is part of broader efforts by the African Development Bank to support modern health infrastructure and encourage local production of medicines and vaccines.
